Speaking Up and Out to Bob Iger: Yup, I Emailed Him

I get the price we pay in today’s America for speaking up and out. But if we don’t speak, who will?

I thought the last straw for me was T’s effort to take over the Kennedy Center, seeking also to have the storied place renamed in his honor (with the Opera House named for Melania).

But nope, that wasn’t my last straw. The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel is my camel’s back breaking straw: limiting humor and satire because its utterance doesn’t support T and his agenda. Sanitize speech with political bleach. No. No again.

I blogged twice. I shared my dismay with others. It feels like “pissing in the wind” to use a male phrase. So, I decided to write Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney. I don’t know him. I am sure he (or his team) won’t answer. But maybe, just maybe, they count the negative letters they get and the cost of cutting free speech to the bottom line. Eventually. Money speaks louder than I ever can.

In case you want to follow suit, here’s what I wrote. Iger’s email is, it appears, on the Internet. Maybe writing does nothing but doing nothing surely does nothing. Read that again.

Postscript: It appears Iger is married to Willow Bay, the Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism at USC. She had planned a fundraiser at their home next month but that location is now in doubt after some trustees felt uncomfortable after the Kimmel sack. Talk about a home kerfuffle. Yipes. Who gets free speech in that home after the Kimmel dismissal?
